What does the field actually record?
Before treating a displayed time as the time a person acted, identify the source field and the event it represents. A label in a report is a rendering of data. Its significance depends on the application or filesystem, the system state and the process that populated it.
Microsoft’s file-time documentation describes differences between filesystems, time resolution and update behaviour. It also documents that file times can be set independently of file contents. A familiar label is therefore not enough to establish a universal meaning.
Separate event, cause and actor
Consider an illustrative question: a file carries a time associated with access. First establish what that field records in the relevant environment. Then ask which mechanisms could have produced it. Finally ask what evidence, if any, identifies a person responsible for the mechanism.
A system-generated event and a deliberate user interaction can have different implications. The possibility of an automatic process does not establish that one occurred; it identifies a hypothesis that may need to be tested against the available records.
Knowledge is a further inference
Even where a device or account can be associated with a person, that does not automatically establish what the person saw or understood. The expert should distinguish what the technical evidence demonstrates from assumptions supplied by other evidence in the matter.
Questions about intention or legal responsibility should not be silently absorbed into a technical conclusion. The report should explain which parts of the inference are supported by the examination and which depend on facts outside it.
What a useful examination addresses
Identify the original field, decoding method and time basis. Examine relevant system behaviour and contextual records. Test materially plausible alternatives where feasible. State whether the available evidence distinguishes between them, and how strongly.
A conclusion can be useful even when it is limited: the evidence may establish that a record existed at acquisition while leaving its cause or attribution unresolved. Windows artefact analysis and metadata analysis are scoped to those distinctions.
