Practice notes

When should the underlying artefacts be examined?

Go beneath a derivative report when the source, processing or interpretation could materially change the answer.

Begin with the uncertainty

A derivative report is often an efficient way to locate relevant material. It may be sufficient for a limited question about what the examiner reported. A disputed technical inference can require more: the original record and enough context to check what it means.

The decision to go deeper should be tied to the issue. Ask which unresolved assumption could change the opinion and which source would allow it to be tested. Requesting every available byte without identifying that purpose can create cost and delay without improving the answer.

Indicators that source examination may matter

A decisive display label is unexplained. Two tools disagree. The acquisition is incomplete or its coverage uncertain. A timestamp has ambiguous meaning. Records appear inconsistent. The report omits a relevant application, account or time range. Attribution relies on an account association without examining other possible causes.

These are reasons to investigate, not findings that the report is wrong. Clarification from the original examiner may resolve the issue; otherwise a bounded source examination may be necessary.

What “underlying” can mean

For an application record, it may mean the database schema, relevant tables and relationships, stored values and associated files. For Windows activity, it may include the source artefact, its generating component and other records bearing on the proposed event. For an acquisition issue, it may mean logs, settings, errors and a source inventory.

SQLite illustrates why context matters. A database using write-ahead logging can have committed changes in an associated WAL file before they are checkpointed into the main database. The SQLite WAL documentation explains that relationship. Copying only the main file can therefore provide an incomplete view in those conditions. This is a reason to preserve a coherent source set, not a claim that every SQLite database has a WAL file or that every missing file changes the result.

A bounded examination plan

Identify the proposition and record, obtain the relevant source set through agreed secure transfer, document its identity and check how the report was derived. Test alternative interpretations where they are technically plausible and material. Keep sufficient notes and outputs to explain the examination to another expert.

Distinguish direct observations from reconstructed relationships and assumptions. If the source cannot be obtained, explain which part of the conclusion remains untestable. Do not substitute certainty simply because the report uses a confident label.

Illustrative scenario: conflicting records

A report places an event at one time while another artefact appears to contradict it. The records may concern different events, clocks, time zones or update behaviours. Looking at stored values and the generating mechanisms can reveal whether there is a conflict at all. A collection of traces is not yet a timeline develops that distinction.

Digital evidence review can define the source question; supplementary analysis may address it after an initial opinion. Relevant capabilities include Windows artefacts and digital reconstruction. Review the expert profile and instruction guide before sending material.
